Save our Trail was started by a group of neighbors in the Medlock Park and Clairmont Heights neighborhoods of Decatur, Georgia. PATH and Dekalb County have partnered to build a bike/pedestrian trail along South Peachtree Creek, linking Medlock Park and Mason Mill Park. Save our Trail was started to encourage the completion of the South Peachtree Creek Trail.

I've seen that the county has done some work to make this more usable. We're getting there!
ReplyDeleteThe trail is open--the last bridge is finished and open. There is still construction debris to be cleaned up near the bridge.
ReplyDeleteAre Plans to Continue the Path about to be thwarted again?
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed immensely walking or riding my bike on the new path. I think it a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Occasionally I scan the blog of “Friends of Mason Mills Park”. You are likely aware that the members there are predominantly those that vehemently opposed, and for a while nearly ended the creation of our path. I found posts there indicating that there are plans to continue expanding the Path. I think this is great! Reading the blogs from “Friends of Mason Mills Park” it looks like the ‘tree huggers’ are back with renewed exhilaration and vigor. I have pasted their blogs here so that we can get prepared for what comes next. I hope we can sort out the true, not so true and distortions of truth as this unfolds.

SPCT Phase 2 Posted by: "olbill61"

Well we have the answers about the surveying work in Mason Mill Park. PATH is planning an extension of the existing trail that will go from the stone bridge through the waterworks area, across the CSX RR on a 125' clear span bridge and then continue along McConnell Drive to the tennis center parking lot.
As far as has been uncovered so far there are (once again) no permits, no environmental impact studies, no tree plan, apparently no bidding of any kind and no approval from the BOC.
It's as though none of the legal battles fought and won by Three Forks ever happened. Once again county laws are being broken, state laws are being broken and possibly even federal laws are being broken.
After PATH gets done with raping the forest for Phase 2 their next move is Phase 3 which goes through the floodplains along Burnt Fork Creek. Phase 3 starts at the tennis center, crosses Burnt Fork Creek near the tennis center, goes between the creek and the RR until just before the beaver pond, then crosses the creek to the West side and continues parallel to the creek through dense forest until it hits N. Decatur Road. Commissioner Rader is apparently on board with all of this. And once again it looks like the untouchable person who can get anything he wants is Mr. Ed McBrayer.
And once again we get to watch more of our forest disappear at the same time as our taxes go up. Is this a great county or what?

Bill, I'm on board if you want to continue our storming Town Hall. I can do more than just make protest posters, too. Best wishes, LORI

I can't quite put this together in my head. Do you mean "until it hits
N. Druid Hills Rd." I seems to me that there is a significant drop
between the tennis center and Burnt Fork Creek. I can't imagine ridding
a bike down that. Maybe we will be graced with another over-sized
boardwalk.

You are correct. I meant to say N. Druid Hills Road.
The construction details for Phase 3 are not on the plans I have. For Phase 2 there is a 510' run of elevated boardwalk leading to the bridge over the RR. This boardwalk is up to 27' above the existing grade. The bridge across the tracks is located approximately at the round water tank along the RR.
I will post the plans to the files section as soon as I can take them to be scanned. I will also post on the Three Forks web site all of the emails that we uncovered about this project.
